On May 13, 2023, Drum For Unity returned to Montreal’s Chinatown to celebrate Asian Heritage Month, bringing together drumming teams and cultural performers from diverse backgrounds in a powerful display of unity. For the first time in the festival’s history, drummers from Indian, African, and Caribbean communities joined in, reinforcing the event’s mission of promoting diversity, inclusivity, and the fight against racism.
Founder Jimmy Chan envisioned Drum For Unity as a platform to unite Montreal’s multicultural communities, encouraging cultural exchange through the universal language of rhythm. “Today, we drum for friendship, we drum for world peace, and we drum against racism,” said Chan, emphasizing the importance of collective action in fostering understanding and support among communities.
The festival showcased an electrifying lineup of performances, including the Montreal Chinese Waist Drum Group, the Montreal-Caribbean carnival band Gwoup Miel, and the Mauritian dance troupe Zoli Mamzelles. A standout moment was a performance by Grell Jack, known as Cultural Farmer, who highlighted the deep spiritual and historical significance of the drum in his Trinidadian heritage. “The drum is one of the oldest musical instruments in the world, connecting us across generations and cultures,” he shared.
Set in the heart of Sun-Yat-Sen Park, the event began with a traditional lion dance by the Montreal Chan Lion Dance Club, a blessing ceremony meant to bring good fortune and prosperity. Through vibrant dance acts, Chinese opera, and a performance by Montreal-Guadeloupean singer Aldo Guizmo, attendees were immersed in a rich tapestry of cultures, each telling a story through rhythm and movement.
Beyond cultural celebration, Drum For Unity also aimed to revitalize Montreal’s Chinatown, which had faced significant challenges due to the pandemic. “The last three years have been difficult for Chinatown’s businesses,” Chan explained. “This festival not only preserves our heritage but also invites all communities to support and help Chinatown thrive once again.”
As Drum For Unity continues to grow, it remains a beacon of togetherness, resilience, and cultural appreciation—a reminder that through rhythm, we can bridge divides and create lasting unity.
